Joe Stavola graduated from the State University of New York at Albany
and New York Law School. First admitted to the New York Bar, he practiced for 13
years as an associate and partner in a New York City firm that was the largest medical
malpractice defense firm in the United States. Mr. Stavola has been admitted to
practice in North Carolina since 1991.
For over 25 years, Mr. Stavola has concentrated his practice on the defense of hospitals,
physicians, and other health care providers. He has also represented physicians
before licensing boards. A frequent advisor on risk management and hospital
liability matters, Mr. Stavola has lectured before hospital organizations, physician
groups, insurance companies and medical societies.
Mr. Stavola is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts of North Carolina, as
well as the United States Courts of Appeals for the 2nd and 4th Circuits. His work
before the North Carolina Supreme Court was instrumental in establishing the right of
physicians to have immediate appeal in matters affecting statutory privileges. Mr.
Stavola has extensive experience in the trial of medical malpractice cases involving a
wide range of medical specialties and has obtained many successful outcomes for health
care providers in fields such as obstetrics, general surgery, emergency medicine,
orthopedic surgery, nursing, and pathology.
Mr. Stavola holds membership in various local and state bar associations and is a member
of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys. For well over a decade, Mr.
Stavola has received Martindale-Hubbell's highest "AV" rating, and he is
included in "The Best Lawyers in America," in the field of Medical Malpractice
Law. He has also held positions on several private educational boards and
fundraising committees.
